News & Updates
More than 170 women gathered on February 27 in support of childhood literacy at our annual Power of the Purse, hosted by Women United.
Each year, Women United hosts the Power of the Purse fundraiser to activate changemakers from across the community. As usual, attendees at this year's event participated in an electronic silent auction for brand-new designer bags from brands like Vera Bradley, COACH, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, and Dooney & Bourke. Proceeds from the auction power community change for others!
Both the format and the location were all-new this year. Rob Dob’s Restaurant & Bar welcomed us with delicious food and drinks, while Felix and Fingers provided dueling piano entertainment. Everyone raved about the lively night club vibe!
All proceeds from the evening boost reading skills and school readiness for thousands of young children in our community who are enrolled in our childhood literacy initiative via Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
We want to give a hearty thanks to all who attended! You are investing in the future academic success for our youngest community members.
In addition, many area community and business leaders invested in childhood literacy by donating and sponsoring various aspects of the evening .

DOLLY PARTON’S IMAGINATION LIBRARY
In February 2023, United Way of McLean County launched a chapter of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to promote literacy among preschool aged children by providing access to books. Any child under the age of 5 can register to receive a free book each month.
Enrollment has been incredible! Already, more than 4,000 children have received over 40,000 books. According to the 2020 census, McLean County is home to over 8,000 kids under the age of 5. Our aim is to reach every child in the county, so we’re 50% there!
